The process of pumping liquids and solids puts the equipment under constant stress, which makes Belzona solutions for pumps necessary. This effort generates, as a consequence, corrosion and erosion processes in the main components of the pumps such as impellers, casings and shafts. Wear rings, studs, and housings must cause major problems with pump operation and performance.

Initially, the damage will produce surface roughness and pitting that will increase friction and cause a drop in system efficiency, increasing operating costs. However, if these corrosion and erosion issues are not addressed in time, they can jeopardize component integrity, and ultimately equipment failure.

While replacement might be an obvious solution, it is generally associated with high costs and lead times of weeks or even months. On the other hand, hot work, which includes welding, can induce stresses in the equipment material and create galvanic corrosion problems. Also, none of these solutions attack the underlying problem.

For this reason, more and more pump maintenance personnel are choosing polymeric cold cure technologies to repair and protect their equipment.

Belzona pump coatings

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) es el buque insignia de la gama. In areas that are severely damaged (eg, where part of the substrate has been removed by impact), the mechanical strength of the substrate can be restored. This frame can be built by bolt mounting or by cold welding on wire mesh or steel plates. The repair is then completed by filling the frame with Belzona material to recreate the original profile.

Protection

For complete protection against future damage, a coating must be applied over the component. Belzona offers a wide range of protection systems for application in liquid form for temperatures up to 180ºC (356º F). In addition, they resist the attack of a great variety of chemical substances. Like Belzona repair materials, their coatings do not contain volatile organic compounds, reducing health and safety risks and preventing product shrinkage commonly associated with many other coating technologies. Also, unlike many other coatings that must be applied in thick layers, Belzona’s coating systems are relatively thin and do not create flow restrictions.

Pump Scheme

The most common are Belzona 1311 and Belzona 1321. The system forms a durable protective coating for metal repair and protection against erosion and corrosion with excellent resistance to chemicals in situations of continuous immersion at temperatures up to 60ºC (140ºF).

Other specific coating systems have also been designed to withstand ultra-high temperatures, hot inorganic acids, high cavitation conditions, or to provide protection against highly abrasive particles.

The range of long-lasting protective coatings is complemented by Belzona 1341 (Supermetalglide). It is a high performance coating system that can improve the efficiency of the pumps. At the same time, the coating protects the component against future corrosion, which means that its effects will last for a long time. Thus, it reduces energy consumption and operating costs.
