Flange protection and repair solutions are critical to containment of fluids in a piping system. Loss of containment, whether in chemical pipelines such as hydrocarbon and gas systems or water distribution pipelines, has significant environmental, operational and commercial impact. This could pose a serious security risk.

Flange corrosion problems

Crack corrosion is a common damage mechanism where there is a concentration of corrosive substances in a localized area. In fact, the rate of corrosion is accelerated by the concentration of corrosive materials within an enclosed space. The crack between the faces of two flanges is the ideal environment for corrosion development.

Over time, corrosion that begins with expansion of the inside diameter of a flange can spread to the gasket area. The concentration of corrosive materials in the space between the sealing surface and the gasket material can influence the corrosion rate of the flange face. The gasket functions as a seal covering the face surface from the corner edge to the end of the face machined surface. Corrosion in the sealing zone can lead to loss of containment and product leakage with catastrophic consequences for the environment.

Insufficient external protection in these areas can cause rapid and greater damage to the flanges and fasteners, which will accelerate the deterioration of the integrity of the system. The consequences of this situation are not easy to predict, as they depend on the prevailing conditions. The degradation of the substrate can be slow and continuous, depending on the severity of the environmental conditions; however, under extreme conditions, the external corrosion process can quickly reach a point where the structural integrity of the system is totally impaired.

Applications of Belzona flange face molding technology are as follows:

  • Corrosion protection of new and in-service flange faces.
  • Restoration of damaged flange faces.
  • Dissimilar metal insulation that prevents the formation of corrosion cells.
  • Can be used in conjunction with nozzle insert and vessel liner solutions. Creates a continuous internal protective film that ends outside the process environment.

Belzona Flange Encapsulation System

These systems are used to protect flanges of most shapes, sizes, and configurations from corrosion. We encapsulate the flange so moisture does not enter. Belzona 8411 inhibitor also has mold release properties. This allows the layers of the Belzona 3411 or Belzona 3412 coating to be removed from the joint to allow inspection.

If maintenance is required, the coating is simply cut with a sharp blade at the level of the separation plane on both flange faces. The two halves of the membrane fold back to expose the bolts and flanges. Once the maintenance work is finished, the membranes are deployed back to their original position and sealed by applying Belzona 3411 or Belzona 3412.
