The combination of air, water, chemicals, and heat in cooling towers creates a highly corrosive environment. Therefore, it is common to find perforations and large metal losses in units in service. This causes leaks at the panel joints which affect the efficiency of the unit.

Additionally, cooling tower fan blades generally erode at the front edge, and crack and flake at the rear. Thus, the overall efficiency of the cooling system is reduced. Poor maintenance, for example poor lubrication of loose bearings, pulleys or fan hubs, leads to splines and wear on the shafts.

Air conditioners are a vital part of any heating or air conditioning system. If left untreated, the loss of metal will allow refrigerant leaks and contamination of the chilled water.
